Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
