Delhi Rises to Hazardous Haze Following Diwali

As Tuesday dawned residents of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" range.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Multiple areas of the city recorded an AQI exceeding 500, which represents ten times the recommended limit recommended by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, concentrations of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x higher than acceptable levels.

Fireworks Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous smog that blankets the metropolis as winter approaches.

Nevertheless recently, the newly elected local government appealed to the highest court to request a relaxation of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" – historically questioned by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "tradition and environment".

Legal Ruling and Enforcement

To the disappointment of public health and environmental advocates, judges agreed to the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be set off during designated periods throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Numerous recording stations throughout Delhi registered contamination reaching highest levels around late evening to extremely hazardous levels seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

The proliferation of fireworks during the festival also sparked a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province pointing to worsening pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from across the border following the celebrations.

Persistent Environmental Problem

Extremely elevated readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have continued as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition showing no improvement.

During the festival period, the amount of dangerous particles in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to 70% higher the most severe readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the globally most contaminated urban center.

Various Contamination Factors

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a combination of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, generating dangerous smog that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air descends.

Public Health and Financial Impact

Both financial and medical consequences on the approximately 33 million inhabitants residing in the capital region is significant, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is estimated to be causing 10,000 untimely mortalities each year in the capital.
