European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
