Mounting concerns have emerged over the potential of warfare among Horn of Africa neighbors, Ethiopia and Eritrea, as aggressive discourse has escalated in the past few weeks.

What Has Ethiopian Officials Stated?

Ethiopia's, being landlocked, demands for entry to the Red Sea through Eritrea has sparked a fierce verbal exchange.

Ethiopian Prime Minister first openly declared in 2023 that his nation's access to the sea was an crucial concern, comments that Eritrean authorities dismissed.

Relations between the both governments have often been tense. Following a prolonged struggle for freedom, the Eritrean state, which has a extensive maritime frontage, formally separated from Ethiopian rule in the early 1990s, making it without sea access.

Current Comments from Ethiopian Officials

Abiy and military leader Field Marshal Birhanu Jula have directly stated sovereignty of Eritrean maritime facility of the port of Assab – some 60 km from the boundary - and suggested the intention to seize it militarily.

Amid continuous challenges from Ethiopian officials, Eritrea's reaction has been limited to concise remarks on X from Information Minister Yemane Gebremeskel.

Officials have denied Ethiopia's demand for sea access describing it as "dangerous" and a "negative policy" of "expansionism" – a policy of retaking previous domains.

Government spokespeople alerted on recently that attempts to justify "blatant hostility" would have major implications for Ethiopia and its neighbors and is a "redline that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Security Movements on the Ground

There have been few indications of large-scale army activities in the boundary zones between the two countries.

However, in Ethiopia, government media has displayed graduation ceremonies of many recruits at various military training camps.

The director of human resources department of the armed forces, General Hachalu, recently said in an interview that the defense forces was in a "reliable position" as "tens of thousands of recruits" were entering service, which he said was "a message to our adversaries".

Past Roots of the Dispute

For more than half a century from 1890, the territory was ruled by Italian colonisers.

After Italy's defeat, it was then controlled by the British administration before turning into a federated part of the Ethiopian empire.

But in 1962 the ruler ended this system and the region became totally absorbed into the Ethiopian state.

A thirty-year civil war followed, finishing with Ethiopia's defeat in the early 1990s. Sovereignty was then approved by the population in a referendum in 1993.
