Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
